What is a Magnetic Induction Loop?

A hearing loop or magnetic loop is an aid for people with hearing loss using a hearing aid. With this system, the sound coming from a speaker's microphone or sound equipment is transmitted via a signal to the person's hearing aid, which can then hear it without being disturbed by any ambient noise.

The installation of a magnetic induction loop generally consists of an electric cable located in the floor, walls or ceiling of a room forming a loop. This wire is connected to a magnetic loop amplifier that emits an electromagnetic field, which then transmits it to the ear of the hearing impaired person.

The current standard NF-EN 60118-4 :

The installation of a Magnetic Induction Loop must comply with the European standard NF EN 60118-4. The magnetic induction loop is the main way to make accessible to the hearing impaired a quality sound broadcast (shows, fire alarm messages, reception), in accordance with the "LAW n° 2005-102 of February 11, 2005 for equal rights and opportunities, participation and citizenship of disabled people" which came into force in 2015. The standard concerns all establishments receiving the public (ERP).
